Over the summer we accepted short story submissions along the theme “Breaking of Bread.” Bread is a pervasive symbol throughout the Bible. The idea of breaking bread is sometimes used as a symbol of community and coming together, yet Jesus is also the bread broken for us–a violent and brutal act.

This fall we’re looking for flash fiction (1,000 words or less) along the theme “Unexpected Beginnings,” due by December 1. Learn more about our fall writing contest here. And don’t forget to subscribe to our newsletter (click here), so that you don’t miss any future opportunities.

We received a great pool of submissions for our summer contest. Thank you to Melissa Pauquette for judging this month’s contest.

Summer Writing Contest Winner & Runner-Up

The winner of our summer writing contest is Abby Bales for her short story titled “Sonia.” Abby’s short story rose to the top among a diverse pool of submissions.

Abby has won a $100 Amazon gift card, and we’ll feature her short story and biography on our website and podcast soon.

The runner-up is Savannah Jane McCrary for her short story entitled “Bread and Water.” Savannah’s story was a perfect fit for the theme and brought the Kingdom to the forefront of the narrative with a clear and poignant message.

Great story, Savannah! You’ve won the item of your choice from the School of Kingdom Writers Bonfire store.

Thank you to all who entered this writing contest. We hope that you’ll submit to our next contest.
