Welcome to the fourth week of the Spring Writing Challenge!
You all did so well with your stories last week! There were so many interesting and unique ways you interpreted the prompt. It’s now the fourth week, so it’s time to do it again! Will your story have an epic battle between good and evil? A long-lost evil brother? Whatever you decide, we can’t wait to see what you come up with.
So, without further ado, here’s your next prompt!
Week Four Prompt – The Theme Prompt
Write a story that’s about a
Bigfoot Reunion
Wait…what’s a theme prompt?
A theme prompt is a prompt that’s about a particular subject! It doesn’t matter where your story takes place, who’s in it, or what’s said. The only thing that matters is that your story must be about a Bigfoot Reunion.
Before you start writing, we have some important rules for you to follow.
Writing Rules
1. Please keep the content of the stories you post to a PG rating. Please avoid real curse words. Violence/fighting should be limited and purposeful. Please do not include any spice.
2. Your story must be 1,000 words or less, and must contain the prompt to be counted for the challenge. You’re not required to post it in order to “win” the challenge, but if you want it to count for your team, your story must be posted by Sunday at 11:59 PM ET, and you must include your team name.
Remember to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and post your story as an “answer” to this question, not a “comment”. 🙂 You’re all doing such a great job! I’m so proud of all the stories you’ve posted.
Happy Writing!

Just Another Encounter
It was the scariest thing I have ever seen.
Rare was it to get a glimpse between thick branches of fragments of one Bigfoot pacing in solace through the dense forest.
Hikers always described their encounters as catching the motion or a possible outline of one of these larger than human creatures. When in a group of people, only one of the less than completely sane members could report the sighting while the others may have heard a branch break under the heavy mysterious footsteps that rumbled over the broken landscape from no apparent direction.
Nobody ever described seeing two standing together making hand signals like two neighbors discussing the newly purchased living room furniture. With low grunting noises rising from their position slightly below my hidden vantage point, I watched the pair interact without knowing that they had been spotted.
So terrifying was my initial reaction that it was minutes before I remembered to pull out my phone for some pictures or short videos. By the time I swiped and fixed the camera upon my targets, a third Bigfoot rolled into the opening between the surrounding trees. Though there were no rocks ringing a firepit, this might have been a good place for a small campsite in this secluded part of the hills.
I only came here hoping to catch a view of the gully that stretched beyond the circle between the rolling hills. Yet my eyes could not examine the breathtaking sight of the rocky ledges along the valley with the Bigfoot gathering taking place in my presence. Though I knew nothing about animal interactions, it was clear I was not witnessing animals in a hunting group or moving about a nest. The newest entry to the trio waved a hand with the palm down at each of the other two in what I took as a greeting. Once within reach, one of the originals slapped a large backhand onto its chest strong enough to make a solid thumping noise resembling the closing of the bottom drawer of a desk.
I looked down at my phone to stop the video I was shooting only to be crushed to find I had been filming close by branches instead. My head jarred upwards when I heard the approach of two more sets of footsteps followed by grunting greetings, each receiving the thumping on the chest by the same original member. My curiosity peaked I wondered if that one was perhaps the leader so that the others all paid respect by taking the hit of its large paw.
I could no longer focus on just one of the beasts as the interactions became numerous between the five. Though not in a circle, they seemed to be able to respond to any other Bigfoot while standing in two lines facing each other, another clear example that this must be intelligent communication. Examining the five figures individually, I attempted to discern whether their figures were different. Unable to decide if any was larger than any other Bigfoot, I studied their hair looking for possible styles or colors to distinguish them. Baffled, I could find none.
Remembering my phone once again which hung like one of grandmas unnoticed pictures before my body, I raised it enough to tap the picture button once out of anger, but I did not notice that the dim light set off the timer for an open lens to take a longer exposure photo.
“Daaaaavvvvvvee,” came the echo through the trees behind me. Quickly turning an ear towards the sound I knew it to be my niece calling out to find me. Then I heard the trees below rustle with a gentle breeze. By the time I looked back down at the opening I saw only a gentle shower of leaves dropping from the surrounding trees. Immediately I turned to seek my family in the woods behind eager to share my tale of this chance meeting.
My brother was first to question my return saying, “Way to get lost out here, Dave.”
“You guys are not going to believe this,” I replied.
“Wha’d you see, a Bigfoot,” asked my niece as the others laughed their approval of the harassment.
“No,” I said, “I saw five. Sort of having a Bigfoot reunion. And I have a picture.”
My niece ran to my side faster than a schoolboy joins his team after being picked. As I swiped open the phone and the photos, she leaned in for a look. When the most recent photo displayed she cocked her head trying to see the image.
“Big maybe, but no feet,” she said before walking away.
My brother’s hand came flying in from the side pounding my chest when he said, “Way to go. Got lost and you’re seeing things.”
Pulling the photo closer to my horrified eyes, I saw the five streaks of grayish brown start in the middle and travel up the screen along with extended green trees. A picture of nothing. Ugh.
I had no record of my encounter but felt no disappointment. I knew out there somewhere were five happier than usual creatures which had encountered each other on this fine evening.
Your story had well-written descriptions that drew me into the story and into the (narrator) Dave’s observation and thoughts. I do think similarly with you and the narrator that the experience was not a loss since it may be better off for the Bigfoot family to be off the radar.
Thanks Eunice. I am not an experienced writer, so when people say they don’t know what their goal is when they start writing. I had not ever had that happen. In this case, I completely surprised myself with the ending when I got there as only th return to the group was planned. Fun doing this.
Thanks for sharing, Dave. This week was so hard for me!
