Welcome to the fourth week of the Spring Writing Challenge!
You all did so well with your stories last week! There were so many interesting and unique ways you interpreted the prompt. It’s now the fourth week, so it’s time to do it again! Will your story have an epic battle between good and evil? A long-lost evil brother? Whatever you decide, we can’t wait to see what you come up with.
So, without further ado, here’s your next prompt!
Week Four Prompt – The Theme Prompt
Write a story that’s about a
Bigfoot Reunion
Wait…what’s a theme prompt?
A theme prompt is a prompt that’s about a particular subject! It doesn’t matter where your story takes place, who’s in it, or what’s said. The only thing that matters is that your story must be about a Bigfoot Reunion.
Before you start writing, we have some important rules for you to follow.
Writing Rules
1. Please keep the content of the stories you post to a PG rating. Please avoid real curse words. Violence/fighting should be limited and purposeful. Please do not include any spice.
2. Your story must be 1,000 words or less, and must contain the prompt to be counted for the challenge. You’re not required to post it in order to “win” the challenge, but if you want it to count for your team, your story must be posted by Sunday at 11:59 PM ET, and you must include your team name.
Remember to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and post your story as an “answer” to this question, not a “comment”. 🙂 You’re all doing such a great job! I’m so proud of all the stories you’ve posted.
Happy Writing!
A Missionary to the Bigfeet (Bigfoots?)
By Abigail Harrison
Team 1 (Reepicheep)
988 Words
Excerpts from the travel log of Berard Dunstan.
July 27th, 2034. Hoopa, California.
This is the beginning of my travel log during my expedition to evangelize the Bigfoot peoples. I intend to publish this journal upon my return.
I am currently staying in a hotel in Hoopa, 50 minutes from Bluff Creek. That’s where the first video of a sasquatch was recorded. It’s still mostly unpopulated by Americans, and is far enough away from the wildfires that there may still be a Bigfoot population there.
While some of the more… disturbing encounters may have been supernatural in nature, my theory is that the majority of the Bigfoots (Bigfeet?) are extremely hairy, isolated humans. As such, I believe it is my duty to carry the Great Commission to “all nations,” including a nation that very few believe exist.
My guide will arrive shortly. I don’t know when I’ll return.
Goodbye, California. I am off to join the Bigfoots.
July 30th, ‘34. Bluff Creek wilderness.
I was woken by strange, distant yelps shortly before dawn, so I decided to make this journal entry now. I’ve wandered towards Peak Eight for the past two days, and the yelps were the first potential sign of a Bigfoot. They came from the north-northeast, so that is the direction I’ll head tomorrow.
The weather has been hot and dry. I’ve been plagued by mosquitoes, but the herbal repellent my mother made works well.
I’ve been continuing my Bible studies. I brought a good English translation, as well as manuscripts in Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic. I intend to translate the Scriptures into the Bigfoot tongue. The books and notebooks are heavy, but I believe that they’ll be worth the effort.
Today is Sunday, so I’ll take a day of rest. I’ll spend the day praying and studying the Scriptures, especially the Gospels.
Goodbye for now, dear reader. I must not forget that I’ll be publishing this when I return!
July 31, Bluff Creek wilderness.
I spent the entire day hiking, and am writing this by lamp light. I’m currently in a valley, near a river. I found many fallen trees arranged in “X”s, which people often think are Bigfoot structures; some sort of territory marking. I’m not fully convinced, as trees fall all the time. However, I’ll continue in this direction.
For another “evidence,” I have noticed feelings of hopelessness and despair trying to overwhelm me. They could be entirely natural, people get depressed. Or they could be from the Bigfoots. There have been so many reports of Bigfoots imprinting their emotions and communicating telepathically that it is a possibility. I speculate that they, as a people, either have some mental capacity that the rest of us lost, or… that they have experimented with the supernatural and gained unholy powers. I don’t know.
On to more troubling news. Even though I am in a valley, I saw smoke drifting in from the southeast. I’ve been here for four days, and already the fires have grown.
August 16, 2035, somewhere north of Peak 8.
I have been captured by the Bigfoots!! Or, the “Rwakk-hee!” as I think they call themselves.
In any case, the night after my last entry, I found myself surrounded, then dragged away. They led me through the woods for several hours. They confiscated my notebook, but brought all of my gear. They rather ruined the tent, but that’s alright. They put me in a cave for two weeks, and have finally given me back my books! We hardly understand each other, but it seems that I was right! They are people!! Tall, hairy, unclothed people, but people nonetheless!
I have noticed patterns in their vocalizations, and have tried to communicate with them. All efforts so far have failed, but it’s only been two weeks. It takes time to learn a new language!
Oh, I am so excited! I’ve only seen around a dozen adult Bigfoots, but I suspect that I am in a community of some kind. I’ve heard calls from beyond my cave that sound like younglings.
These are people, and they need to hear the good news of the Lord Jesus Christ. I must not forget that amid my excitement. I am on a mission, not a field trip.
August 19, the cave.
I have reached a breakthrough!!! A shorter (6’8”) Bigfoot arrived… who can speak English!! Not much, just some basics like “food,” and “stay away.” However, I can now say “food” in Bigfooteese! “Growff.” It is said with a descending tone (it’s tonal!!) and the “ff” on the end is harsh and long.
They have tried to impress their emotions on me, but I have resisted by the power of the Holy Spirit. Something about their limited telepathy seems demonic, and I want nothing to do with it. They seem confused by my resistance. Perhaps, someday, it will be an opportunity for me to explain God’s power.
November 24, Five Spot Village.
After three months of learning the language, two of which were with the community, not in the cave, I have discovered two important things.
First, the name of their village: “Shree-loo,” which is what they call a white and purple flower that grows here. We call the flower “Five Spot” in English.
Second, they have told me why there are so many Bigfoots here. Raven, the English-speaker, explained that the wildfires have forced them to gather here, in an unpleasant family reunion. The clans have a tendency to fight when cooped up. As he explained this, Raven had to teach me how to express some complex emotional ideas, which will be very useful for my translation.
As for alphabet, I have modified the Latin script to suit the broad range of sounds in Bigfooteese. Raven is curious, but the rest ignore my efforts to teach them.
This is going swell. I wonder what their reaction will be when I start trying to talk about God!
