Welcome to the final week of the Spring Writing Challenge!
It’s the final week! This has been such a fun challenge. You’ve all done so well with your stories. There are so many interesting and unique ways you have taken the prompt. It’s now time for the final week, so let’s do this one last time! We can’t wait to see what you come up with.
So, without further ado, here’s your final prompt!
Week Six Prompt – The Character Prompt
Write a story about a character that experiences a rebirth
Wait…what’s a character prompt?
A character prompt is a prompt that’s about a specific character. It doesn’t matter where your story takes place or what’s said. What matters is that your story must be about a character who experiences a rebirth.
Before you start writing, we have some important rules for you to follow.
Writing Rules
1. Please keep the content of the stories you post to a PG rating. Please avoid real curse words. Violence/fighting should be limited and purposeful. Please do not include any spice.
2. Your story must be 1,000 words or less, and must contain the prompt to be counted for the challenge. You’re not required to post it in order to “win” the challenge, but if you want it to count for your team, your story must be posted by Sunday at 11:59 PM ET, and you must include your team name.
Remember to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and post your story as an “answer” to this question, not a “comment”. 🙂 You’re all doing such a great job! I’m so proud of all the stories you’ve posted.
Happy Writing!
We’re so glad that you participated Juli! 🙂

Might turn this into a full novel or something someday
I took a deep breath as I stepped onto the podium, and found myself blinded by a spotlight.
I raced around the corner, unable to catch my breath as I chased the fading light of Mark riding away.
When my eyes adjusted, I faced down to meet the eyes of the crowd below. Many journalists were holding their pens over their notepads in anticipation to write down my exact wording and twist it as much as they could.
I nearly managed to catch up when I was harshly knocked down. I looked upward at the face of my attacker, only to be met by a masked biker. I tried to shout certain words at them, but no air would come out of my lungs.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” I began, searching through what notes I was able to recover, trying to make it sound like I was going off a memorized script. “I am standing before you today to address one of the greatest issues happening in the alleyways behind our own streets.”
I managed to push myself up as I gasped for air. The masked attacker pulled out a gun and pointed it at my heart, but before he could fire it, I drew on my reserve strength and charged at him, knocking the weapon out of his hand.
“If we keep letting this happen, your children could end up growing up just to live in a world where criminal activity has spread to the main streets, where our government is replaced with the biggest gangs and crime bosses, and…” a sudden pain in my chest caused me to cut myself off. I ignore it and keep going, hoping my recovery makes up for it.
I could feel his glare through his mask. But it only lasted a second before he simply pulled out another gun. I pointed mine at him, but found my energy fading too fast for me to actually pull the trigger. As I dropped the gun, he fired his.
“We can’t keep turning a blind eye to this. It won’t be long before court and government members start taking bribes from wealthy criminals, and that will only lead to these systems falling completely into the pockets of men like Brian O’Dell.” I felt my energy failing again, and clutched the podium to keep myself stable.
I pulled energy from my emergency energy pendant, and used it to heal myself. The masked dude was standing over me, laughing as he watched me feebly try to use a basic spell. I managed to make it work enough that I wasn’t bleeding, hopefully not even internally, and used the last of the emergency supply to stand up and face my enemy.
“There are people out there telling you that everything is under control, and that gangs and robbers don’t actually pose a threat to tax paying citizens, as long as they stay in well surveillanced areas. Don’t just sit there and keep believing that our system will hold up against them forever.”
I knew I was fighting a losing battle here, and staying would cost me much more than my mission. It would cost me my life. Using whatever natural energy the healing spell had recharged in me, I ran away from the masked biker, returning to base to get ready for my speech in front of the Lavipolis Town Hall.
“We shouldn’t stand for this. We shoul-” at that point, I lost all sense of where I was and what I was doing. I felt myself getting dizzy until I completely lost my balance and hit the floor hard. I was vaguely aware of panicked voices and cries of shock as everything faded away into the bright spotlight before all fading black.
~~~
It’s been a week since I miraculously recovered. Most people think I’m dead. Part of me is dead.
After the speech, the press decided that, because they didn’t like me, to pass it off that I was trying to scare people because I was involved with the criminal network I was warning everyone about. They don’t understand how much the real criminals have to lose if the ability to hide in the shadows is taken away.
Now, even if I weren’t declared dead, I wouldn’t have power anymore either way. People have turned against Devin Lareax. They’ve convinced themselves that the real problem is the economy or politics or whatever random thing they’ve decided to cast all blame on this time. Less and less people seem to be fighting for a brighter future.
I find myself not leaving the alleyways. I no longer care about using my voice to move the people to fight. I was relieved of my position, after all. Now, I simply care about fighting in whatever ways I can. Even if I’m alone.
Oh my gosh why did this stupid thing take away most of my italics
Now it probably doesn’t make as much sense
If you’re reading this, the first part of the story is two different scenes, ever other paragraph is supposed to be italicized
When the new prompt arrive, my first thought is, Oh no! What am I going to write to make that work? But the Holy Spirit ALWAYS shows up and I get an idea every time. It amazes me. Thanks for a thought provoking six weeks.
