Welcome to the final week of the Spring Writing Challenge!
It’s the final week! This has been such a fun challenge. You’ve all done so well with your stories. There are so many interesting and unique ways you have taken the prompt. It’s now time for the final week, so let’s do this one last time! We can’t wait to see what you come up with.
So, without further ado, here’s your final prompt!
Week Six Prompt – The Character Prompt
Write a story about a character that experiences a rebirth
Wait…what’s a character prompt?
A character prompt is a prompt that’s about a specific character. It doesn’t matter where your story takes place or what’s said. What matters is that your story must be about a character who experiences a rebirth.
Before you start writing, we have some important rules for you to follow.
Writing Rules
1. Please keep the content of the stories you post to a PG rating. Please avoid real curse words. Violence/fighting should be limited and purposeful. Please do not include any spice.
2. Your story must be 1,000 words or less, and must contain the prompt to be counted for the challenge. You’re not required to post it in order to “win” the challenge, but if you want it to count for your team, your story must be posted by Sunday at 11:59 PM ET, and you must include your team name.
Remember to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and post your story as an “answer” to this question, not a “comment”. 🙂 You’re all doing such a great job! I’m so proud of all the stories you’ve posted.
Happy Writing!
We’re so glad that you participated Juli! 🙂
“At the end of your everything you will find your real meaning, and return stronger in your rebirth.”
Arthur stood at the top of a mountain, overlooking the vast forest before him; he was lost. He had gone hiking on the Appalachian Trail and had thought it would be fun to go off the path for some exploration, but he was now lost beyond a shadow of a doubt, and now it was getting dark. He hadn’t expected to get lost so quickly, but the trees were close together, and Arthur didn’t keep track of his surroundings well enough on his brief side excursion, which led to him losing his way. Arthur plunged down the hill towards the forest, trying to find the trail. The new moon made it so that there was no light that night, which didn’t help. Trees seemed to appear out of nowhere, smacking Arthur in the face, but he trudged on, trying to find the path that had seemed not very far away when he left it. The night sounds, which were always so calming on the ambient YouTube videos, were ominous now in real life. Arthur checked his phone again and was frustrated to see no service still. How was he supposed to find his way anywhere like this? It felt like he would be lost out here forever at this rate, and he could not accept that yet. Arthur kept moving in what felt like the same direction for what seemed to be forever, and then the sun started to creep up from the east, although that didn’t help much. It had been twelve hours since Arthur had eaten, and he felt like he was starving. That’s when he saw some wild berries; he grabbed a handful and ate them immediately, not knowing what their properties were. It didn’t take more than fifteen minutes before he was sick to his stomach, throwing up, and that’s when the hallucinations started, small at first, a voice calling his name from right behind him, then the movement of something in his peripheral vision. This is the last place Arthur wanted to be right now, and the last thing that he could have wanted to happen, but he had to try to move forward wherever that was.
The sun was getting lower in the western sky now, and Arthur was still nowhere near anything his disillusioned mind could remember, and there was nothing he could do, and not much more he could muster up. After what seemed like an eternity of shuffling and dragging himself through the woods, Arthur tripped over a knee-high obstacle and rolled on the now hard, stony ground, he didn’t know if this was real or just another illusion of his mind. He lay there for a second before a light woke him from his stupor, and a voice babbled something to him that he couldn’t understand, then it all went black.
Arthur woke up to a bright interior of the back of an ambulance vehicle, and EMTs were working on him as he lay there. Arthur looked at the closest and asked
“How did you guys find me?”
The EMT answered and said
“There were a lot of people looking for you, thankfully, you stumbled out onto the road before you lost consciousness. I’d count my stars if I were you kid, you didn’t have much time left by the time we got to you.”
Arthur felt himself falling out of consciousness again, but he finally felt safe and in good hands. He promised himself never to take anything for granted, and to live his life as though he’d been reborn.
When the new prompt arrive, my first thought is, Oh no! What am I going to write to make that work? But the Holy Spirit ALWAYS shows up and I get an idea every time. It amazes me. Thanks for a thought provoking six weeks.
