Welcome to Week Three! Can you believe we’re at the halfway mark for the challenge?
You all did so well with your stories last week! There were so many interesting and unique ways you interpreted the prompt. It’s now the third week, so it’s time to do it again! Will your story have aliens? Zombies? Maybe it’ll have a dragon in it! Whatever you decide, we can’t wait to see what you come up with.
So, without further ado, here’s your next prompt!
Week Three Prompt – The Starting Sentence Prompt
Write a story that starts with the
following sentence: So this is what drowning feels like.
Wait…what’s a “Starting Sentence” prompt?
A sentence prompt is a prompt that uses a particular sentence. It doesn’t matter where your story takes place, who’s in it, or what’s said. The only thing that matters is that your story must start with this sentence: So this is what drowning feels like.
Before you start writing, we have some important rules for you to follow.
Writing Rules
1. Please keep the content of the stories you post to a PG rating. Please avoid real curse words. Violence/fighting should be limited and purposeful. Please do not include any spice.
2. Your story must be 1,000 words or less, and must contain the prompt to be counted for the challenge. You’re not required to post it in order to “win” the challenge, but if you want it to count for your team, your story must be posted by Sunday at 11:59 PM ET, and you must include your team name.
Remember to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and post your story as an “answer” to this question, not a “comment”. 🙂 You’re all doing such a great job! I’m so proud of all the stories you’ve posted.
Happy Writing!
Will you notice if someone is like 1-25 words over the 1000 word limit (asking for a friend hahaha)
what if i accidently posted my story as a comment last week lol? does it still count?
Hey Izzy and Ava,
If you accidentally post your story as a comment instead of an answer, you should get an email to alert you! It will still count for points for your team, but no one will be able to vote for it.
And, to answer your question for your friend 😉 As far as word count, for your story to count for the challenge, it does need to be 1,000 words or under. Great questions!
Spring Writing Challenge- Week Three
-A New World-
By: V.S. Wilson On: Team 1
“So this is what drowning feels like…” As I was pulled through what felt like a barrier, protecting the willow tree and its secrets, I felt water touch my knees. The once majestic tree that stood in my backyard had turned to dust and faded into the abyss. The current was strong and the water wiped me round and round. I tried to fight against it, reaching for where the willow once was. The water was rising, now to my waist. Although I stood in a deep dark silence, light was cast upon the water. “Where was the light coming from and why did it cause a mesmerizing but hypnotic music to play?” Every time the water moved the light moved with it and played a new note in an eerie melody. The water was now at my chest. I tried to jump, looking for a way to get out, or the boy who had brought me here in the first place, but I could see no one. My eyes wandered to and fro but all I could see was black, a deep mystic black that held its secrets and so tight anyone that ever found out was swallowed never to be seen again. “Why did I go? He’s probably lying to me!” The water was now up to my neck. The tips of my hair, soaking wet, coiled in the water. My once dark brown hair started to turn a lilac purple. The color shot up my hair, but left my roots bare. My eyes, much closer to the water now, could see the image the light was making. A hallway, almost infinite, lights, candles on either side, and doors, exits and entries lined the hall. A figure walked, closer or farther away I cannot tell, but just as the figure came to view the water swallowed me. “I am drowning.” or that’s what I thought. As I flung my arms and legs trying to remember what I had learned so many years ago, the water pried my eyes open and what stood in front of me left me in aw. I had forgotten I was underwater and that I needed to hold my breath, when I realized I had started breathing water I thought “This must be the end.” I swallowed so much water I thought I had died, when I felt a hand on my face. My eyes were opened, I was breathing just fine, I could swim. I didn’t know how, I didn’t bother to look down. I only cared about the face, my mother’s face. I mean it looked just like her, had to be her. Her beautiful hazel eyes, which in the spring turned a beautiful shade of olive green, her nose, round just like her face, her beautiful almond shaped eyes and long lashes, furrowing brows, showing the weakness she tried to cover with the beautiful, elegant, motherly smile. “That had to be my mother!” I didn’t question it and when she spoke I knew it was the truth, had to be the truth. ”My child, what brings you here? Why stray away from your home and leave the place which loves you dearly? Why come to this place? It was so much more happy where you used to be. You may leave now it is all your choice.” She spoke with such any air about her. It truly made me want to stay. “If you stay…your life will continue. It will be beautiful and magical, much better than any other place you could ever go. But if you do not choose to stay… you may walk through the gate into a new land, a new world. Filled with new people, fantastical places and the unsettling truth. Which I fear you are not ready to learn. A world that expects you to be what you’ve never learned to be. It is all your choice, my child. CHOOSE WISELY!” The last words ecoged causing the water to shack, sending me deeper. I felt hands close around me holding me tight. I didn’t want to go. I wanted to go back home, where everything was the way I knew it was, but it wasn’t. My father wasn’t there, I had to get him back, it was the only way. I didn’t have to speak a word, she already knew. “As you wish, but if you are to go you must, and I command thee, go and speak to the professor. Ask him about the necklace that you wear, the one that now glows a glorious pearly white. Ask him for guidance, ask what it means then shall I return again. Go…” The last word she spoke was barely a whisper. As the voice faded, so did she. I slipped from her grasp. I lost my mother all over again. The word she spoke I did not understand again. It was all the same, but this time she gave me a door to the next chapter of my story. I saw it at the bottom of this endless ocean, a glowing doorway. At first I just waited, hoping there would be a current that would take me down to it, but then I remembered I wasn’t standing, I was floating, I was doing it all on my own. So I swam. I swam with passion, confidence, resilience, and I entered the doorway. It all went to black
Wait so if we like accidentally post our stories as a comment here, will it count or be ignored?
