In 2019 one of my full length stage plays was published in the U.K. by Lazy Bee Scripts. So exciting. It has been purchased and staged once by a community theatre company in England. Again, so exciting. My contract states they are the only ones who can sell the play, then I recieve a portion. Lazy Bee has just been sold and the new owners are allowing any playwright who want to withdraw their scripts to do so. So do I withdraw and sell the play on my own site, or do I leave it there to be able to say I have a script published in England that gives me credibility as a playwright?
That’s a tough one! I think we have to figure out “what’s the mission?” for your career as a whole. Then you can figure out the best way that script can be an asset for the mission.
I think it’s easy to be emotionally-invested in our work and as such, to overvalue it. This is just one script of many that you have and will write. In the grand scheme of things, it will be such a small piece of the pie. Remembering that perspective allows us to just think of the particular project as a tool.
So with no emotional strings attached, what’s the best tool that it can be? As a writer, do you need a credibility tool or a product-for-sale tool right now?
Thanks Brad! Ive put a request in to chat with them about the play but haven’t had contact back.
