Join us on May 13th, 2025 at 8 pm ET for our next Prose Club. This is an opportunity to learn writing techniques from a classic story written by a master writer.
This event is free. All you need to do is sign up at the bottom of this article to receive the Zoom link in your inbox.
We’ll meet live over Zoom to discuss a short story and then provide a lesson on the most notable techniques used in the story.
Download the short story
This month, we’ll be discussing “Greenleaf” by Flannery O’Connor. You can download it for free here: https://sackett.net/FlanneryGreenleaf.pdf (Note that this is provided by an unrelated third party.)
Flannery O’Connor was best known for her short stories and Southern Gothic style of writing, which explored themes of faith, morality, and the human condition in the South. Some of her more renowned short stories can be found in A Good Man Is Hard to Find, and Other Stories.
What to expect at the event
Make sure you download and read the story prior to the meeting. We’ll get started right at 8 pm ET and meet together for about an hour.
We’ll begin the meeting with an open discussion of the short story. We want to hear your opinion on things like:
- What did the author do well?
- What do you think could have been done better?
- How did the author effectively (or ineffectively) move the plot forward, develop characters, or establish the scene?
- How did the author grab and maintain your attention for the whole story?
- What bigger question or theme did the author want to talk about? How did she inject that into the story?
- What worked when this was written that wouldn’t work for today’s readers?
You’re welcome to come listen and participate as you feel comfortable. You won’t be required to say anything if you’d prefer not to.
Following the open discussion, Brad Pauquette, director of The Company and bestselling author, will teach a few writing techniques that we can observe in Flannery O’Connor’s story and apply to our own writing.
This event will be recorded and released to our podcast channel. However, there will be a ton of value to participating in the live discussion. Mark your calendar and don’t miss the live event.
