Our apprentices have uprooted their entire lives to move to Cambridge, Ohio for our 2-year writing apprenticeship. They show up every day, and they put in the work.

As you get to know them, you’ll soon realize that they’re normal people. Just like you.

What sets them apart isn’t prolific genius or inborn talent. It’s their choice to say yes to what God’s calling them into.

Introduce Yourself

I’m Sarah Sax, a lifelong reader and writer! I love rainy days, sunsets, nighttime, and cats.

Where are you originally from?

I’m from Jacksonville, Florida, not too far from the beach.

What genres do you write?

I’ve written a little of everything, but my favorite is scifi-fantasy. I love creating elaborate worlds and writing stories set in those world’s histories.

What year of the program are you in?

First year.

Is there a core theme/message that inspires your writing?

Power, and how heavy and fickle it can be.

I’m brainstorming a story about a woman who’s the most powerful wizard ever in her world. This of course gives her a lot of status, because so many people rely on her power, but this leads her to make selfish decisions that have a lot of negative effects on the rest of her world, which leads her to become one of the most hated people in history.

. . . . Not to mention, the magic she carries is so intense it’s disabled her in a lot of ways and could kill her if she’s not careful. Also, using it is super addicting, which makes the problem worse.

What can you do now that you couldn’t when you started the apprenticeship?

I’m getting better at noticing when my stories need setting and character descriptions. And I just finished the first draft of a book, which I haven’t done in years!

Would you rather live on the moon or in an underwater cave?

The moon, no contest. I’d love to live in one of those space colonies from 70s scifi art. And I’m afraid of deep water.

What led you to apply?

Four years ago, I thought I was going to college. I wanted to read thick books and write long papers and debate history and philosophy.

Unfortunately, college requires classes you don’t want to take, like math and, well, math. I dropped the college idea and decided to focus on writing professionally.

After a few months of research on how to write an original book (never mind get it published), I was too overwhelmed to write.

But in the middle of this research, I found The Company and learned about the apprenticeship.

It sounded too good to be true–a school just for writers? But I thought and prayed and questioned and visited, and two years after graduating high school, I sent in my application. And it still feels too good to be true–but it’s true!
