Financial Resources for Apprentices
The Company’s full-time apprenticeship program carries a tuition cost of $7,200 per year. This is a year-round program.
Upon acceptance to the program, apprentices are required to make a non-refundable $600 deposit. Tuition may be paid in monthly installments of $600, or in full prior to the beginning of each school year.
Finances should not be a barrier, and we’ve been intentional about ensuring that The Company is accessible to all.
We provide resources so that every apprentice can fully pay for his or her time at The Company and graduate debt-free. We do not provide conventional financial aid like student loans or scholarships. By keeping costs as low as possible, creating an environment that is conducive to part-time income, and providing resources for mobilizing community support, we ensure that every apprentice can fully pay for the program and the cost of living without debt.
Becoming a professional writer and paying your bills is hard enough. It’s nearly impossible when you’re also straddled with student debt. Here are the steps we’ve taken to make a high quality debt-free education possible:
Low tuition and cost of living.
The average cost of tuition for a two-year Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in creative writing program at an in-state public university is $27,600. Private schools are typically three times this cost. Our program costs only $14,400, and includes more instruction, more support, and greater practical application. (See “How Do We Keep Our Tuition So Low?” for more info.)
In addition, our program carries few additional costs. You will NOT need to purchase thousands of dollars’ worth of books, reside in expensive on-campus housing, or purchase a meal plan.
Shared housing with other apprentices is also available. Apprentices who use this option will see an extremely low cost of living as they share expenses with other members of the program. Apprentices who choose to live on their own will also see a very low cost of living in Zanesville, Ohio.
Consistent schedule conducive to part-time work.
Unlike most higher education, this is a year-round program with a predictable weekly schedule. All instruction and coursework will be completed between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. With rare exceptions, there will be no homework or additional projects that need to be completed.
This allows our apprentices to work part-time jobs without causing scheduling headaches for themselves and their employers. Because this is a year-round program, schedules are sustainable and predictable.
Due to the low cost of the program and the opportunity for shared living expenses, many of our apprentices pay for 100% of their costs with part-time work.
Community-based funding resources.
We believe that the people of God pay for things differently. As Christians, we work together to invest in each other and advance the Kingdom of God.
If you would like additional help paying for tuition, we will provide fundraising training and resources so that you can rally a community of believers around yourself who will financially support you.
Writing is a ministry. It’s reasonable and biblical for the community to support you for a short time while you develop a self-sustainable ministry, just like you would support any other missionary.
You don’t need to do this alone. We’re here to help. You can pay for some or all of your tuition using our fundraising model.
Our low cost of attendance, opportunities for part-time work, and community fundraising model ensure that any apprentice can afford to attend this program. Many of our apprentices simply work in addition to their schooling and successfully pay their expenses and tuition.
