Are you planning on joining us on October 13 and 14 for our fall retreat at The Company headquarters in Cambridge, Ohio?

We can’t wait to meet you! This is going to be a fun, low-key event. We just want to share our lives with you.

If you’re interested in applying to our apprenticeship, this is also an ideal time to visit.

While you’re welcome to contact us and schedule a visit at any time, our fall retreat is really our version of a college campus visit.

During this retreat, you’ll get to experience what The Company is really like. During a private visit, our time is sometimes limited as we go about all of our normal business. But for this retreat, we’ve dedicated two days just to our visitors. You’ll have plenty of time to really immerse yourself and ask all the questions you can think of.

You can read all about the retreat and register here.

Here are the answers to some of the most common questions we’ve received.

Who can come?

Anyone can come. The retreat will have components specifically designed for people who are interested in applying to our full-time writing apprenticeship program, but all are welcome.

If you’re interested in hanging out with us for a day, register here.

Our apprenticeship welcomes people from all over the country. While most of our apprentices tend to be of college age, we also welcome older applicants.

Who should I bring with me?

You don’t have to bring anyone, but you’re welcome to bring a guest with you. Your $27 registration fee includes one guest.

This guest could be a parent, friend, spouse, or maybe even an online writing buddy from a different place. Your guest is welcome to stick with you through the day, or they can come and go as they please (if, for instance, a parent wants to go to the movies instead of watch you write).

What will I do there?

On Friday, you’ll participate as if you were an apprentice here. You’ll join us for morning worship at 8:30am. Through the day, you can sit in on classes, work on your own writing projects, and hang out with the other guests and apprentices. The day is your own, so you’re free to come and go as you please.

We typically break for an hour lunch at about noon, but the apprentices tend to hang out together and eat. You’re welcome to join us, or you can go out for lunch.

Our day ends around 4:30pm.

On Friday evening, we’ll have a special dinner just for our retreat guests.

On Saturday morning, all retreat guests are invited to join us again to learn more about the apprenticeship and ask questions.

How many people will be there?

That’s a good question! We’d like to know that ourselves.

This is the first time we’re doing something like this, so we don’t know for sure. However, we’re expecting a small group of ten or less (plus their guests). This will be a low-key, private setting, not a big event. We want you to see what it’s really like here, not some hyped-up version.

Where can I stay for the night?

Your lodging is up to you. Cambridge is located right at the intersection of two major interstate highways, I-70 and I-77, so there is an unusually high number of hotels available. The Hampton, Fairfield Inn, Mictotel, Sleep Inn, and Comfort Inn are all good options.

For the budget-minded and/or the adventurous, you can also camp at Salt Fork State Park, which is an amazing park, especially this time of year. In October, temperatures are starting to drop in our part of Ohio, but with a good sleeping bag and a little preparation you should be OK. Overnight temperatures could get into the low 40s.

Where should I fly into? How will I get there from the airport?

The Company HQ is about 90 minutes from the Columbus International Airport (CMH). We’re also about the same distance from the Canton-Akron airport (CAK), although the flight options are more limited there.

You’re responsible for getting from the airport to Cambridge. You should plan on renting a car or making other arrangements. If you’re interested in riding with other guests who might be flying in at a similar time, you can send us an email. We’ll do our best to help make those connections, but can’t guarantee anything.

When do I need to register by?

Registration will close on October 11.

While we’re not expecting it, it’s possible that we could reach capacity and close registration early. So if you’d like to come, we recommend registering sooner rather than later.

If you’d like to learn more about The Company and are wondering if you might fit here, this fall retreat is an ideal, low-pressure way to visit and see what it’s like.

Unlike a private visit, there will be some special, extended opportunities to ask questions and really get to know us. Take advantage of this opportunity.

We can’t wait to meet you!
