Right after high school and throughout your twenties is about the time you find yourself worrying about planning for the future.

First, it’s deciding on a career path you think you might like. (But what if you end up hating it?) And then it’s applying to dozens of jobs that might be in the field you chose. (But what if you can’t find one and have to work at Micky D’s?)

And what if, through it all, you take the wrong path and mess up God’s plan for you?

Good news: if you wholly commit yourself to your relationship with Jesus, you’ll automatically be on the right path.

The other day, I was reading my Bible and came across Psalm 119:105. It says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

I used to read that verse and think: “And that’s why I need to read my Bible, so I don’t wander onto the wrong path.”

And that’s a logical (and not necessarily wrong) conclusion to come to. After all, the more you know the Bible the more you know how to follow God.

But this time, I read the verse and remembered some other verses that talk about “word” and “path.”

John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.”

And John 14:6 reads, “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”

Jesus is both the light that guides us and the path we follow.

If He is both the lamp that lights the path and the way we should go, then following Him means you are already on the right path. You don’t need to worry that you’re on the wrong path or that you’re going to mess things up.

You just need to focus on staying close to Jesus.

When I imagine that verse, I picture walking in the woods at night. The sky is overcast, so there’s no moon and no stars to see by. Jesus stands there next to me carrying an old-fashioned oil lantern. Sometimes, he turns the light up and holds it up high so I can see a little further, but most of the time, the light is just illuminating the step or two directly in front of me.

Proverbs 16:9 “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”

You don’t have to worry about making the wrong step. Every step is guided by Jesus. As it turns out, he knows the path you’re on even better than you know the back of your hand. He knows all the ins and outs and is right beside you to guide you.

Don’t worry about taking the right path. Lean into your relationship with Jesus. He directs and lights the path you are on because He is that path. By following Him, you are automatically on the path you’re meant to be.
