God’s ways are higher than our ways. We see that in Isaiah 55, but we also see that in the writing community.
Doc Dave DeWitt is a math teacher. He didn’t come from the stereotypical artistic background that we often associate with writers. Despite that, he felt that God was calling him to pursue writing, and he said yes.
Introduce yourself…
I enjoy a quiet life in Cuyahoga Falls with my wife and golden doodle Bo while being close to retirement from teaching mathematics. We love traveling, hiking, and visiting our grandkids.
What genres do you write?
Seems to be science fiction with current technology as I want to engage people in the discussion of AI in our daily activities, or how it will develop into serving the public. I also have written fantasy.
Is there a core theme/message that inspires your writing?
I’m following a path which began with the vision of the card game title leading to writing a blog where a woman dying of cancer was one of my only readers.
I decided if she could take the time to read it knowing that she had months to live and said she enjoyed it, I could take the time to write it. As I continued I had this crazy notion to learn more about writing and found a small Christian group in Ohio with a Pastor for a leader teaching people how to write.
What are some challenges you’ve faced in the transition from math to creative writing?
I never know what to do because unlike the math subject that I teach to high school students, there aren’t any rules.
The motto I have always gone with for myself as well as in coaching or teaching is to be a student of what you want to do. I became all in with learning and writing following the idea to give an hour a day to this new activity that opened a side of my brain that never before had the exercise it needed. I’ve always had stories in my head but never wrote anything or shared my ideas with anyone. It’s a terrifying thought.
Would you rather fight a bear or swim with a shark?
I guess my best option would be to run from the bear, jump in the water with the shark and hope it prefers the larger bear to me.
What’s your favorite resource from The Company?
The Arche year videos got me on the right path as I continue to learn with each pass through the three act structure.

I love that answer about the bear and the shark. Clever thinking!
