If you’ve never tried to herd pigs, how do you know what obstacles your beaten down old farmer character might encounter? How can you write heart-pounding action scenes if your skin is white from the glow of a computer screen?

Jennaya Chou is a writer in our community who invests in hobbies and experiences other than writing. She’s a Canadian homesteader who writes action/adventure.

Introduce yourself…

I live on a little homestead in Southwestern Ontario with my parents and five siblings, where we maintain a bit of a barnyard zoo, an orchard, and a (rather large) vegetable garden. A few other hobbies I enjoy are: considering unpopular points of view; crocheting/drawing cute things; and exploring new disciplines to become a Jane-of-all-trades (so to speak).

What genres do you write?

Currently my work is action/adventure, but I have aspirations to have written in every major genre one day.

Is there a core theme/message that inspires your writing?

Breaking out of the mold we expect ourselves to fit into.

What’s the biggest challenge you face for your writing today?

Honestly, figuring out how to incorporate God in my stories without it feeling preachy. I want it to be common and everyday that some of my characters mention God and notice what he’s doing, but I also don’t want readers to feel that I’m pressing something upon them, instead of offering it.

Where would you hide your work if stories were suddenly outlawed?

I would hide it in my chicken coop for sure. Perhaps in one of the nesting boxes.

What’s your favorite resource from The Company?

Oh, now I have to make a decision! Hmm… so far, The Company’s Novel Challenge, especially the weekly meetings with Brad and the other participants. Brad has so much knowledge, and I always came away with answered questions and encouragement.
