I am teaching a writing class using The Novel Matrix, and a student just submitted a 7 Character chart in which the Object of Affection is a magical object. It fulfills the role of a) being something the main character wants to protect (by keeping it from the antagonist) and b) not serving any practical purpose in the story. Is there any reason the Object needs to be a person, or would that work?
