As I write my Sidekick seems to have Guide traits but I think I need a clever way to introduce the Guide into the storyline. Can you share some examples of how that may unfold? I wondered if they could come in when the character has hit rock bottom to remind them of truth and how to get back on track?
Hey Edie. Good question.
The Guide is usually introduced very early in the story. One of the functions of the Guide is to help the protagonist (and the reader) understand the mission. Without the Guide, you may leave the reader feeling untethered. If we don’t know what the protagonist is supposed to be doing, it makes it hard to root for them.
So my recommendation would be to introduce your guide well before the Rock Bottom moment. The protagonist doesn’t have to listen to the Guide at first (and often they won’t until after the Rock Bottom moment), but at least we can see what the protagonist should be doing but is refusing.
